Imagine, Cuba is more of a gubernatorial issue in Alabama than Florida. Here’s what the Democratic candidate for governor of Alabama, Ron Sparks, said on Sunday at the University of Alabama: “My position has always been clear. If we are going to do business with China and going to do business with Vietnam, then why not Cuba?
“The opportunities in Cuba are many,” noted Sparks, Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries. “In my mind there were three words: jobs, jobs, jobs.”
Alabama started trading with Cuba in 2003. The economic impact is now nearly $400 million. More than half of the poultry that Cuba imports comes from Alabama. Sparks pointed out that trade with Cuba makes eminent financial sense, given that the island is only 600 nautical miles from Mobile.
Imagine.
