Of Pets And People

Anybody else feel this way? When jury selection was underway for Kendrick Morris, charged with that brutal Bloomingdale rape, I wondered how they could pick a jury. Who didn’t know of this notoriously high-profile case? I wondered why there wasn’t a change of venue. And then I wondered about what that said of anyone who did qualify to sit in judgment of Morris.

And then I read the post-trial comments of the woman who was the jury foreman. She said the DNA evidence was the clincher. She then addressed her selection to the jury. She said that although she lived in the area of the highly-publicized crime, she had, indeed, been unaware of it. She explained that she is an animal advocate who has come to focus more on pets than people.

“The more that I learn about people,” she said, “the more disappointed I am in humans.”

I have pets. I follow the news all too closely. I get it.
