* Interesting piece in the Times recently about Arena Football League players and salaries. Many of these players are barely a cut below NFL caliber. Some were caught up in the wrong-place, wrong-time numbers game. Most players make $400 a game (three “franchise” players pull down $1,000 per) and need real, full-time jobs to make ends meet. For example, Tampa Bay Storm quarterback Brett Dietz is also a financial services rep for Fifth Third Bank.
Let’s hear it for unskewed priorities within the world of professional sports. Refreshing.
* Anybody surprised that obnoxious football mercenary Lane Kiffin is still making news? And doesn’t it seem appropriate that he now presides over the program at USC, the ultimate football factory. And yet Monte is his dad? Somebody spent too much time on the “Tampa 2.”

* Three things that crossed my mind while watching John Daly shoot that opening round 66 at the British Open: 1-Redemption. 2-He’s kept the weight off. 3-Shouldn’t there be a dress code for golfers?
