Somebody needs to tell Rich Walz, the Florida Marlins’ play-by-play broadcaster, that Tampa Bay’s team is no longer the “Devil Rays.” Walz’s multiple “Devil Rays” references were beamed into this market via FSN on Father’s Day for the last of the three-game Rays-Marlins’ series.
In addition, Walz noted that the Rays’ proposed downtown stadium is of the “retractable roof” variety. Would that it were.
The Marlins’ TV announcer also passed along that Fredi Gonzalez, the Florida manager, said that the two best teams he had seen so far this season were Tampa Bay and the Philadelphia Phillies. He said that after two straight defeats to the Rays – but before the Rays’ butt-ugly, 9-3 Father’s Day loss to the Marlins.
