He is what he is. Donald Trump, of course. Sure, he has campaign trappings, but ultimately he does what he wants. Obviously. You don’t rein in a scorpion.
But, alas, he’s not the only impact player with a game-changing solo act this cycle. Ask Hillary Clinton. Ask her about Bill. You don’t rein in a consummate-retail-politician-former-president with higher approval ratings than either of today’s two candidates.
So, no shock that he sat down recently for a publicly-noted, private conversation with Attorney General Loretta Lynch–aboard her plane in Phoenix–while his wife is under federal criminal investigation. The investigation is that important–and so are any red-flag optics that could–and would–be spun as tampering.
Talk about manna for a Trump campaign that can’t get out of its own way.
No, this is not 2008 when Bill was a liability in Hillary’s campaign against then-Senator Barack Obama. But, yes, this is still the former president who can only stay an effective, popular surrogate for so long before going off script.
