Anyone else get the sense that, while Vice President Joe Biden is giving every indication of seriously considering a run for his party’s presidential nomination, he will ultimately forego the opportunity?
This is a guy who has run before and enjoys the hunt, and few can touch his resume. But he’s never been 73 before, and, more importantly, he’d have to take out Hillary Clinton first. No way that doesn’t get awkward and ultimately ugly if he plays to win, which is how the game is played.
To be sure, Biden loves center stage and the prospect of one more ultimate spotlight. You know he’s kind of milking it. But, no, he’s not about to take on Hillary Clinton. He either loses and doesn’t look good going after her vulnerable character, or he appears to halt history in the making. His legacy deserves better.
I think Biden is positioning himself as the best-case Plan B if the much-less-likeable Clinton self-immolates over some smoking-gun email. Sitting down with progressive icon Elizabeth Warren and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and making the case for the Iran deal to important constituencies sends that signal to key Democratic Party operatives.
If Plan B needed activation, then, what the hell, the Dems could double down with the Biden-Warren ticket.
