This country recently honored the memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated in Memphis 45 years ago. It was well noted that President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a national day of mourning on April 7, three days after King’s murder. Libraries, museums, businesses and schools closed. Even the 40th annual Academy Awards ceremony was postponed.
And how’s this for juxtaposition. Five years earlier, President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. Two days later, Nov. 24, the National Football League played its scheduled slate of games. It’s still a disgrace.
