Harbour Island Roots

A lot of us can remember Seddon Island. About 175 acres of weeds, snakes, mosquitoes and phosphate transit. Then came Beneficial’s build-out of a hotel, office building, people mover and “festive retail” in the 1980s. It was fashionably re-named Harbour Island. I remember seeing former President Gerald Ford tee up a golf ball and (eventually) drive it across Garrison Channel to the convention center site. Not, seemingly, that long ago.

Now Harbour Island is a built-out, gated community, home to some of the tonier addresses in town and eye candy for those with a nautical perspective. Realtors even tout its roots, as well as its location. In fact, Sunday advertorials remind us that it’s a “quarter-century old.” Somehow, “quarter-century” sounds older than 25 years.
