This may sound naive–or worse. But here’s my response to those voting something other than their consciences, common sense or society’s best interest on last week’s Senate measures to expand background checks and to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Shame on you and whatever ideologically defiant constituents and NRA lobbyists you answer to. People will actually die–ironically, some on your side of the spectrum–as a result of your unconscionably counterproductive and cowardly decision.
And by the way, what’s the worst thing that could have happened as a result of voting for the public good and saving some lives? You’d lose a primary or a general election? So? Your incumbency and your ego are not more important than helping protect society. And you wouldn’t exactly be options-challenged, would you? Perhaps exhume that law degree and go back to chasing ambulances or trade on your name to consult or lobby. Ends, I suspect, will be more than met. And, for what it’s worth, standing for principle can even be its own reward. Doing the right thing also has a constituency, even if not as loud or deep-pocketed as the NRA.
