You know that big parade that we had last Saturday? The one that used to be little in size and scope?
Now it’s the one that drew way more than 100,000 spectators and featured 60 costumed krewes, 140 customized floats and lots of music, frenetic entreaties and bead-tossing. The one that included an air invasion, a parachute jump and a spectacular, sky-illuminating “Piratechnic” extravaganza. The one that went from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and was televised by WTVT, Channel 13. The one with parade-goers fueled on funnel cakes and lemonade. The one with a market for reserved seating starting at $24 per person.
And, yes, the one that looked very much like a proud city’s cool, signature parade–and didn’t involve alcohol zones, arrests, security cameras, a safe house and zero-tolerance-for-anarchy warnings.
One question: Do we really need another one tomorrow?
