Book Beat

*For those who figure Pam Iorio’s book, “Straightforward: Ways to Live and Lead,” is a sure sign of her interest in political office outside the Tampa Bay area, they have a bit more material. There’s been some national notice too.

Among those weighing in on her book–in very complimentary fashion–is Judy Woodruff of the PBS NewsHour. After reading the former Tampa mayor’s book, Woodruff was moved to phone Iorio. Among other things, Iorio told Woodruff that leaders shouldn’t be “ideologically entrenched” and cited Gov. Rick Scott, of high-speed rail notoriety, as a prime example.

*Bob Samuels, pioneer African-American banker and outspoken cancer survivor, has finally finished his memoirs. His book, “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t” will be available in a few days. He doesn’t pull any punches in chronicling his life from humble beginnings in inner city Philadelphia to Wall Street. He’s faced discrimination, glass ceilings and prostate cancer. His account is earthy, honest and, ultimately, inspiring.
