Bulls’ Iconic Victory At Notre Dame

Congratulations to Skip Holtz and the USF Bulls on last Saturday’s 23-20 upset of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

*The game became, in effect, a tribute to Lee Roy Selmon, who spent 18 years helping guide USF from intramurals to the most iconic stage in all of college football. The Bulls comported themselves with class and prevailed against the odds, the elements and the ghosts of Rockne and Gipp.

*How ironic that the familiar ranting figure on the sideline during a tense USF game — was Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly.

*USF has had big, attention-getting wins before — at Pittsburgh, at Auburn and at West Virginia to name three — so a marquee win isn’t why Skip Holtz was
brought in. He was brought in to avoid those composure-challenged losses against the likes of Connecticut and Rutgers when USF was favored later in the
season. He was brought in to be better than an Big East also ran. But, yes, year two of the Holtz era could not have begun with a better, more inspiring result.

*Not only did USF leave South Bend with the most celebrated win in its history, but it also exited with a check for $850,000, the biggest Bulls’ pay day ever.
